Soccer: A History of Brazil
Synopsis
This course traces the historical forces behind the evolution of soccer in Brazil – from an elite sport to a national passion with unifying powers.Course Overview
Some of the topics explored in the course are the transition to a slave-free society, immigration, the development of a national identity, urbanization, the military dictatorship, as well as gender divisions and the role of the media and economics behind the popularity of the sport.

Rosana BarbosaProfessor Prof. Rosana Barbosa is a Professor of Latin American History at Saint Mary’s University. She completed her B.A. at Universidade Santa Úrsula in her hometown of Rio de Janeiro. Her M.A. and Ph.D. are from the University of Toronto. Specialized on Brazilian history, more specifically on immigration, Brazil-Canada historical connections and the early history of soccer in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.
