Synopsis
Explore the development of popular culture in Latin America, and discover how diversity, social and political struggles influenced the cultures of the region.Course Overview
Topics will include slavery, rhumba, samba, the Cuban Revolution and the creation of salsa as well as imperialism influence in the development of Reggaeton. Emphasis will also be given to visual art and film.

Rosana BarbosaProfessor Prof. Rosana Barbosa is a Professor of Latin American History at Saint Mary’s University. She completed her B.A. at Universidade Santa Úrsula in her hometown of Rio de Janeiro. Her M.A. and Ph.D. are from the University of Toronto. Specialized on Brazilian history, more specifically on immigration, Brazil-Canada historical connections and the early history of soccer in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.
