Women in the Two World Wars
Synopsis
This course examines women’s experiences during the First and Second World Wars. During both conflicts, women fought as soldiers and spies, worked in industry and support services, tended to the wounded, and served as symbols of home and family. Women were also targets of unprecedented violence.Course Overview
Course topics include women’s traditional and non-traditional roles in the First World War, women in Nazi Germany, women in combat, the “Home Front,” sexual exploitation in wartime, and women’s experiences of the Holocaust. Tuesday classes will follow a lecture format, Thursdays will be dedicated to workshops and discussion of assigned readings.
