Reading and Wellness
Synopsis
Drawing upon an interdisciplinary knowledge base, the course will introduce students to the connections between reading, mental health and wellness, and to the benefits of different types of reading in different media. Through a combination of interactive, self-directed and reflective activities and assignments, students will compare the health and wellness effects of reading on social media vs. so called 'deep' or 'immersive' reading.”Course Overview
The course will explore the following topics: interdisciplinary concepts of wellness; different types of reading and why we read; reading a book vs reading on social media; screen reading vs reading a printed object; functional reading vs. ‘deep’ or ‘immersive’ reading; reading and learning; reading and self-awareness; the connection between reading and writing; bibliotherapy; literature and psychoanalysis; reading and empathy, and the connections between writing/literature and trauma. One of the assigned readings for the course is Tanya Tagaq’s 2019 acclaimed book, Split Tooth, a blend of fiction, memoir, poetry and Innuit folklore. The book tells the story of a young Inuk woman growing up in the Canadian Arctic in the 1970s. Through this reading, students will be able to learn about, take part in and reflect on decolonial reading and wellness.
