Synopsis
This course will present the salient aspects of the civilizations of ancient Greece and Rome including the history, political organization, material culture, and their relationships with neighbouring communities in the Mediterranean area.Course Overview
Students will examine primary sources relevant to the history, social, and political organization of Greek and Roman society, and be introduced to the art, architecture, and material culture of these cultures as well as their impact on the contemporary world.
Instructor
Sveva SavelliAssociate Professor Dr. Savelli is an Associate Professor in the Department of Languages and Cultures at Saint Mary’s University. Her interests focus on Mediterranean history and archaeology in the Iron Age and, specifically, on the interactions between Greeks and indigenous populations of Italy as they relate to mobility, trade, and colonization. Dr. Savelli is co-director of the Metaponto Archaeological Project, a multi-disciplinary research project that aims to define the ancient frontier along the Ionian Coast of Italy, in the area of the colony of Metaponto. Her research also extends to the Athenian Empire, funerary archaeology, and cultural heritage protection. |
