Synopsis
An introductory, multi-disciplinary course on writing for the embodied voice: songwriting, writing for theatre, spoken-word poetry. Classes will be held at Saint Mary's University, McNally Main Room 201, Friday,10:00am to 1:00pm, from Sept 6th to November 29th.Course Overview
Enrolled students collaborate closely as a workshop group, sharing and considering works in progress; members of the public interested in joining more casually are invited to come to seven of our twelve class sessions, to hear from our students and guest speakers and to be a first audience for new work.
Instructor
Luke Hathaway
Luke Hathaway is a poet, librettist/lyricist, and performer, who teaches in the Department of English Language and Literature at Saint Mary's University. His book The Affirmations: poems was recognized in The Times (London) as a best book of 2022. He has written extensively for musical performance and for the stage. He is a co-creator of the extended-reality opera Eurydice Fragments (re:naissance opera, 2024), which will premiere in Vancouver this fall; other works in progress include Caeneus, a bronze-age transition story set in the queer world of 1940s America (for James Rolfe / ANIMA); and Do You Hear Me?, a transy ghost story set at Dalhousie University (for Janice Jackson / Vocalypse). |
