Synopsis
This course considers a small selection of ancient texts in contemporary/English translation and adaptation. Classes will be held at Saint Mary's University, Loyola Room 274, Tuesday and Thursday,1:00pm to 2:15pm from September 5th to December 3rd.Course Overview
What do we learn by telling old stories in new ways? Our focus in fall 2024 will be on the Epic of Gilgamesh and on Ovid's Metamorphoses. We'll be considering the former in light of 'King Gilgamesh and the Man of the Wild', a Gilgamesh adaptation playing at Neptune Theatre this fall, as part of the Prismatic Festival: King Gilgamesh the Man of the Wild

Luke Hathaway
Luke Hathaway is a poet, librettist/lyricist, and performer, who teaches in the Department of English Language and Literature at Saint Mary's University. His book The Affirmations: poems was recognized in The Times (London) as a best book of 2022. He has written extensively for musical performance and for the stage. He is a co-creator of the extended-reality opera Eurydice Fragments (re:naissance opera, 2024), which will premiere in Vancouver this fall; other works in progress include Caeneus, a bronze-age transition story set in the queer world of 1940s America (for James Rolfe / ANIMA); and Do You Hear Me?, a transy ghost story set at Dalhousie University (for Janice Jackson / Vocalypse). |
